Teaching-Track Faculty Position (2022 - 2023 hiring cycle)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) invites applications for a teaching-track faculty position. We are strongly committed to all members of our community: students, faculty, and staff. Our mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and to conduct engineering-science research that addresses important societal challenges. We strive to accomplish this mission with the highest dedication to quality, integrity, and respect for others. We are particularly interested in applicants who are committed to and have a passion for a culturally diverse environment and who demonstrate an eagerness to strengthen the culture of inclusivity at CMU. We are actively and purposefully committed to considering a diverse applicant pool in terms of gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, and disability. CMU seeks to meet the needs of dual-career couples and is a member of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), which assists with dual-career searches.

The Mechanical Engineering department consists of approximately 40 faculty, 450 undergraduate students, and 450 graduate students. We have a young, growing, and gender-diverse faculty who have created a dynamic environment for students to engage in coursework and research in both traditional and non-traditional domains that address societal challenges. We have a new building scheduled to open in 2023.  The department provides an ideal environment for educators from diverse technical backgrounds to develop an academic career.

We are searching for a teaching track faculty member to teach courses in the areas of dynamics and controls, mechanical design, and artificial intelligence and machine learning as relevant to mechanical engineering.

We seek an enthusiastic and dynamic teaching professor to teach a broad range of courses, and to enhance the educational experience of students more broadly both inside and outside the classroom. It is expected that you will teach a diverse set of students effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels within the Department and contribute positively to the educational mission of the units.  The expected teaching responsibility for this position is the equivalent of six full courses per year (three each semester). In addition, you will help to advise students (a requirement of all faculty members), and serve on department, college, and university committees, among other activities as required. Some teaching track faculty members, who carry out significant administrative functions, may teach one to two fewer courses than the full load.

Carnegie Mellon has a well-established teaching track faculty line.  Teaching track faculty enjoy the full set of privileges and responsibilities that tenure track faculty enjoy (the only exception is they do not participate in promotion and tenure decisions).  Teaching track faculty are fully integrated into all departmental activities, and they are strongly represented in department leadership positions.  They benefit from the same professional development opportunities that other faculty do, including mentorship from other more senior faculty. They receive the same support for their courses (teaching assistants and resources to develop new materials) as other faculty. Teaching track faculty members have opportunities to conduct research or engage in other activities that advance them professionally, provided those activities are consistent with the department’s overall educational mission.  An assistant teaching professor is initially appointed to a three-year term and then follows a reappointment and promotion process using criteria focused primarily on teaching.  Teaching track faculty are not eligible for tenure; however, if they are promoted to the level of Associate Teaching Professor, they can be indefinitely re-appointed in five-year terms. They may also be promoted to the highest rank of Teaching Professor.

Instructions to Apply: Your application should be submitted to Interfolio and include:

  • A cover letter.
  • Your curriculum vitae.
  • A teaching statement outlining both your experience and philosophy as well as a list of courses you are interested in teaching.
  • A diversity statement of no more than two pages, outlining how you have contributed to and plan to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

You should also request 3-5 professional references via the Interfolio system.

Applications should be submitted as a single PDF document, except for the letters of recommendation, which should be requested individually through the confidential letter request function in Interfolio. You may wish to send an email to each of your letter writers to alert them that they will receive an automated email from Interfolio requesting that they upload their letter of recommendation (sometimes the automated Interfolio emails are mistaken for spam).

Review of applications will begin immediately and all applications received by December 15, 2022 will be given full consideration. We encourage you to submit early. Paper applications will not be accepted. Women and members of traditionally underrepresented minority groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Multiple Tenure-Track Faculty Positions (2022 - 2023 hiring cycle)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions. We are strongly committed to all members of our community: students, faculty, and staff. Our mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and to conduct engineering-science research that addresses important societal challenges. We strive to accomplish this mission with the highest dedication to quality, integrity, and respect for others. We are particularly interested in applicants who are committed to and have a passion for a culturally-diverse environment in research and teaching and who demonstrate an eagerness to strengthen the culture of inclusivity at CMU. We are actively and purposefully committed to considering a diverse applicant pool in terms of gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, and disability. The Mechanical Engineering department consists of approximately 40 faculty, 450 undergraduate students, and 450 graduate students. We have a young, growing, and gender-diverse faculty who have created a dynamic environment with innovative research in both traditional and non-traditional domains that address societal challenges. We have a new building scheduled to open in 2023. The department provides an ideal environment for researchers from diverse technical backgrounds to develop an academic career. We have multiple positions open to candidates from a broad range of engineering backgrounds:

  • General Call: Consistent with the current breadth of departmental research, we welcome applicants with expertise across a wide variety of research areas broadly related to mechanical engineering and who have the ability to contribute synergistically to existing research activities in the department, college, and university-at-large.
  • Targeted and Cross-Cutting Domains: We welcome applicants looking to address emerging challenges in particular fields both within and outside the traditional scope of mechanical engineering. These include controls, robotics, and the integration of artificial intelligence/machine learning with a broad range of engineering domains.

The CMU College of Engineering has a highly collaborative environment with a rich history of interdisciplinary research. Some of that interdisciplinarity has been spurred by faculty who have joint appointments in two departments. Such joint appointments are possible through this search so as to include individuals who encompass multiple specialties.

Expectations: You are expected to contribute to teaching our core undergraduate, elective, and graduate courses. Tenure-track faculty at CMU carry a moderate teaching load, typically two courses per year, which allows time for quality research and close involvement with students. You are expected to establish and grow a strong externally-supported and internationally-recognized research program, contribute to our teaching mission, be a passionate mentor and advisor, and serve with colleagues to help promote the general success of the department.

Eligibility: We seek individuals who hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have demonstrated dedication to our core values: scientific truth, creativity, quality, innovation, and engineering solutions. Faculty appointments are typically made at the rank of Assistant Professor; however, appointments may be made at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor depending on your qualifications.

Instructions to Apply: Your application should be submitted to Interfolio and include:

  • A cover letter.
  • Your curriculum vitae.
  • A research statement of no more than five pages, outlining a compelling vision for a research program that ultimately goes beyond your prior (typically Ph.D. or post-doc) experience. Your statement should include initial research projects that can be immediately pursued with graduate students, given your current expertise, and for which external funding can realistically be sought. Your statement should also include a longer-term vision with more far-reaching plans, which may reference potential collaborators in the department and elsewhere at CMU.
  • A teaching statement of no more than two pages, outlining both your experience and philosophy as well as a list of courses you are interested in teaching.
  • A diversity statement of no more than two pages, outlining how you have contributed to and plan to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
