Carnegie Mellon University Commencement Weekend: May 9 - 11, 2025 

MechE will have a diploma ceremony for just MechE students on Friday, May 9, 2025 from 12 - 3 pm.

CMU will host the main commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 11, 2025. 

Most asked questions about commencement weekend: 

Q: Will the Mechanical Engineering department have their own diploma ceremony during commencement weekend? 

A: Yes! MechE will host their own diploma ceremony where MechE students will have their name called, process across a stage and receive a diploma AFTER the ceremony. 

 Q: As a graduating MechE student, do I need to RSVP to the MechE diploma ceremony? 

A: Yes! An RSVP form was sent to all registered graduating MechE students. Students, please check your email! 

Q: Who will receive the RSVP form? 

A: Any registered graduating MechE student (All BS and MS students graduating August 2024, December 2024, May 2025, and August 2025, and PhD students graduating August 2024, December 2024, and May 2025. )   

If you are unsure of your status, please reach out to your advisor. 

Parents will NOT receive an RSVP form for the ceremony.  Only MechE students. 

Q: Do guests require tickets to the MechE diploma ceremony? 

A: No. MechE does not require guests to have tickets. But we do ask students to RSVP with how many guests they anticipate will attend the event. 

Some questions we ask on the RSVP form include:

  • How would you like your name pronounced at the ceremony? (Example: first name, middle name, last name? First name, middle initial, last name?) 
  • We encourage you to record your name through Name Coach to ensure proper pronunciation:  https://www.cmu.edu/hub/registrar/student-records/namecoach.html
  • Phonetic spelling of your name?  Please also use NameCoach to register how you say your name.

Q: Will the MechE diploma ceremony be live streamed and recorded?

A: Yes, We will live stream the MechE diploma ceremony and we will share the recording by mid to late June.  

The link to the recording and professional pictures will be added to the MechE website when they are available for viewing.

Q: What happens at the MAIN CMU commencement ceremony? 

A: The ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 11, 2025.  Additional details about the difference between ceremonies can be found here.
