For nearly twenty years, Albert Presto’s research has been influential to worldwide understanding of pollutant emissions from energy production and consumption. The research professor and director of the Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies (CAPS) at Carnegie Mellon University now joins the Health Effect Institute's Energy Review Committee to support decisions about how best to ensure the protection of public health as oil and gas resource development continues to grow.
As part of the independent research organization providing high-quality and impartial science about potential human exposure and health effects associated with oil and gas development, Presto will review final research reports and provide commentary as part of an eight person team.
“HEI has been behind really important research into the health effects of air pollution and HEI energy wants to position themselves similarly in the oil and gas space,” said Presto. “This work is important from both a human health perspective and an environmental perspective.”
Presto’s HEI participation continues a history of CMU’s involvement as Jerry Cohon, 8th President of Carnegie Mellon University, played a critical role in conceptualizing and building HEI’s Energy program.
Presto is looking forward to working with the diverse review committee, “Everyone on the committee has different expertise, so there is an opportunity for me to learn a lot from people of different disciplines that are thinking about the same problems I am, but from different angles.”
